Quick & Easy recipe for Protein Balls

These protein balls are the perfect small bites for a quick boost of energy after the gym, in the afternoon, or simply to enjoy because they are so damn good!

The reason for this recipe

While moving to our new place in August 2024, we were craving something to give us a boost of energy. We were already drinking wayyyy too much coffee, so I figured I needed to find something that would help. I had seen “energy balls” in a few coffee shops around and thought to myself I could easily make them myself.

There are lots of options out there for recipes like this, but I wanted something quick and easy to make, with just a few ingredients. As I was still in the moving process, I didn’t have access to a lot of my cooking equipment, but these are so simple to make.

They are definitely best to make with a food processor, but I am sure a blender could work as well. You might have to divide it into smaller chunks, but it is doable.

why you need to make this protein balls recipe

This recipe is the best thing to replace chunky and powdery protein shakes. These small energy bites taste like chocolate chip cookies, and you might want to eat two, three or five (I don’t recommend more than two though!). They are the best pick-me-up after a hike or a gym session, or even after a long and boring meeting that could’ve been an email…

These tend to come back every week or two, and I do enough for my partner and I for the week (which is why the recipe makes roughly 14 balls). I do them on Sunday night, so they are ready to go on Monday. You could enjoy them right away, but these protein balls are better the next day in my opinion. Make them today, you won’t regret it!

Prep Time 30 minutes
Total Time 30 minutes
Servings: 14 balls
Course: Snack

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Quick oats
  • 24 dates, pitted roughly
  • ¾ cup Almond butter
  • ¼ cup Water
  • 2 tbsp Flax seeds
  • cup Dark chocolate chips
  • 3 scoops Protein powder chocolate flavored

Equipment

  • 1 Food processor optional
  • 1 Cookie scoop #24 – 1.5 oz

Method

  1. In the food processor, pulse the quick oats until it turns into a flour-like powder. Set aside in a bowl.
  2. Add the dates to the food processor and start pulsing to cut them into smaller pieces. If they are sticking to the blade, add half of the water.
  3. Add the almond butter to the dates in the food processor and start pulsing. Add the remaining water and pulse until the mixture starts gathering into a ball.
  4. To the bowl with the quick oats, add the rest of the dry ingredients and mix.
  5. Add the dates and almond butter mixture to the bowl containing the dry ingredients. Start mixing with your hands until well combined.
  6. Using the cookie scoop, create all of your protein balls. Once done, start rolling them in your hands to smooth them into small balls.
  7. Refrigerate overnight and enjoy!

Notes

You can enjoy these protein balls as soon as they are done, but they will be better the next day as they will be less sticky.
